What it measures

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] in blood. Labs report it in mg/dL or nmol/L, and the two units are not directly interchangeable.

Lab: Quest or Labcorp (varies by seller) · Specimen: Blood draw at a patient service center

Evidence level: Established

The 2019 ESC/EAS guideline states that Lp(a) measurement should be considered at least once in each adult's lifetime to identify very high inherited levels (>180 mg/dL, >430 nmol/L) (Class IIa, Level C). A 2024 National Lipid Association focused update found sufficient evidence to support measuring Lp(a) at least once in every adult for risk stratification. The 2018 AHA/ACC guideline lists Lp(a) ≥50 mg/dL or ≥125 nmol/L as a risk-enhancing factor in selected individuals. Assay standardization differs between laboratories, and mg/dL and nmol/L results are not directly interchangeable.

Lp(a) Test FAQ

How much does a Lp(a) test cost?

On Oct 20, 2026, 5 posted prices from 5 sellers ranged from $40.99 to $69 including listed fees (median $55). The lowest price open to the public was $40.99 at TestWell.

What's included in the Lp(a) test price?

Each row is the seller's listing for the Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] (lab: Quest or Labcorp (varies by seller); specimen: Blood draw at a patient service center). The Total column adds fees the seller lists on the product page: TestWell ($6 lab processing fee (per order)), Walk-In Lab ($6 physician fee (per order)). Shipping, tax, blood draws and consultations are not included unless the row says so.

Do you need a doctor's order for a Lp(a) test?

Usually not. 5 of 5 listings here are marked self-order: you can buy without bringing your own doctor's order. Some add a listed physician or handling fee, included in the Total. Check the 'Who can order' column.

Which states restrict ordering a Lp(a) test?

Sellers in our table note these limits: True Health Labs: Quest self-order not available in NY, NJ, MA, RI. State rules for consumer-ordered lab tests vary and sellers may block some states at checkout, so confirm on the seller's page.

Can I use an HSA or FSA to pay?

The IRS counts "laboratory fees that are part of medical care" as medical expenses (IRS Publication 502), and defines medical care as the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Whether a particular at-home test qualifies depends on that and on your plan's rules, so check with your HSA or FSA administrator before paying.

Why do prices differ so much?

Sellers set their own prices for the same lab's kit and may bundle practitioner authorization, consultations, shipping or add-ons. The table shows the price and any separately listed fees as posted on each seller's public page on the date checked.

How current are these prices?

All prices were checked on Oct 20, 2026. Prices and availability (including state restrictions) change; confirm on the seller's page before ordering.
