What it measures

Ferritin, a marker of iron stores, alone or as part of an iron panel that adds serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation. Listings differ; the product name is shown under each seller.

Lab: Quest or Labcorp (varies by seller) · Specimen: Blood draw at a patient service center

Evidence level: Established

A 2020 WHO guideline states that ferritin concentration is a good marker of iron stores and should be used to diagnose iron deficiency in otherwise apparently healthy individuals (strong recommendation, low-certainty evidence). Because ferritin rises with infection or inflammation, the guideline gives a higher threshold in that setting (below 70 µg/L in adults may indicate deficiency) and says ferritin should not be used alone to identify iron overload. Iron panels add serum iron, total iron-binding capacity and transferrin saturation.

Ferritin Test FAQ

How much does a ferritin test cost?

On Oct 20, 2026, 9 posted prices from 5 sellers ranged from $30.99 to $69 including listed fees (median $49). The lowest price open to the public was $30.99 at TestWell.

What's included in the ferritin test price?

Each row is the seller's listing for the Ferritin / Iron Panel (lab: Quest or Labcorp (varies by seller); specimen: Blood draw at a patient service center). The Total column adds fees the seller lists on the product page: TestWell ($6 lab processing fee (per order)), Walk-In Lab ($6 physician fee (per order)). Shipping, tax, blood draws and consultations are not included unless the row says so.

Do you need a doctor's order for a ferritin test?

Usually not. 9 of 9 listings here are marked self-order: you can buy without bringing your own doctor's order. Some add a listed physician or handling fee, included in the Total. Check the 'Who can order' column.

Which states restrict ordering a ferritin test?

Sellers in our table note these limits: True Health Labs: Quest self-order not available in NY, NJ, MA, RI. State rules for consumer-ordered lab tests vary and sellers may block some states at checkout, so confirm on the seller's page.

Can I use an HSA or FSA to pay?

The IRS counts "laboratory fees that are part of medical care" as medical expenses (IRS Publication 502), and defines medical care as the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Whether a particular at-home test qualifies depends on that and on your plan's rules, so check with your HSA or FSA administrator before paying.

Why do prices differ so much?

Sellers set their own prices for the same lab's kit and may bundle practitioner authorization, consultations, shipping or add-ons. The table shows the price and any separately listed fees as posted on each seller's public page on the date checked.

How current are these prices?

All prices were checked on Oct 20, 2026. Prices and availability (including state restrictions) change; confirm on the seller's page before ordering.
