Is a mycotoxin urine test worth it? Cost, accuracy and what guidelines say
Whether a test is worth it depends on why it is being ordered, which is a question for you and a clinician. What we can show is what the MycoTOX Profile costs, what it is backed by, and what it does not tell you (prices checked Oct 21, 2026).

What the evidence says
A 2023 guideline on medical diagnostics for indoor mold exposure from the AWMF (the German Association of the Scientific Medical Societies) states that human biomonitoring of mycotoxins has no indication in diagnosing indoor mold exposure and shall not be performed. A CDC report (MMWR, 2015) noted that mycotoxins are found in the urine of healthy people because low levels occur in many foods, that urine mycotoxin levels that predict disease have not been established, and that there was no FDA-approved test for mycotoxins in urine; CDC does not recommend biologic testing of people who live or work in water-damaged buildings.
What guidelines, insurers and the lab say
- AWMF mold guideline (2023): "Human biomonitoring of mycotoxins has no indication in medical diagnostics for indoor mold exposure, and shall therefore not be performed." It adds that the concentration of mycotoxins in food is "100 to 1,000 times higher than in house dust and bioaerosols".
- CDC (MMWR, 2015): "Low levels of mycotoxins are found in many foods; therefore, mycotoxins are found in the urine of healthy persons." "There is no FDA-approved test for mycotoxins in human urine." "CDC does not recommend biologic testing of persons who work or live in water-damaged buildings nor routine environmental sampling for mold."
- The lab (Mosaic Diagnostics): describes the MycoTOX Profile as a urine assay of 11 mycotoxins measured by LC-MS/MS. On payment it says: "As of March 1, 2025, MosaicDX will no longer file claims on behalf of the patient", "MosaicDX is a non-participating provider and not in network with any insurance providers", and "MosaicDX tests are eligible for HSA and FSA". It lists availability as "All USA except NY state".
What it does not tell you
- The CDC notes that "Mycotoxin levels that predict disease have not been established", and that CLIA lab certification, which labs often mention, does "not address the clinical validity of testing".
- Because mycotoxins are in many foods, the AWMF guideline says those found in the body "were primarily absorbed via the food pathway"; a result does not show where an exposure came from.
- Accuracy has two parts: the AWMF guideline says mycotoxins from food and work exposure "can be reliably quantitatively detected in human biological materials" (the lab chemistry), while the CDC and AWMF statements above concern what a result means for a person's health.
This page does not say whether anyone should take the test. Insurance and HSA/FSA rules are covered in insurance and HSA for lab tests.
