Insurance and HSA/FSA for lab tests: what sellers, labs and the IRS say
The online lab-test sellers in our tables list cash prices, and several say they don't take insurance. Health savings accounts (HSA) and flexible spending accounts (FSA) are a separate question. Here is what the IRS, the labs and the sellers say (checked Oct 21, 2026).
Do online sellers take insurance?
Several sellers say they don't. Own Your Labs: "To keep our prices as low as possible, Own Your Labs does not accept insurance. As such, charges from Own Your Labs cannot be submitted for reimbursement from any insurance, or other health care benefit program." JustLabs' test pages say "No insurance needed". For specialty labs:
- Precision Analytical (DUTCH): "We do not bill or accept payment from insurance and we are considered out of network." It says that if a provider orders the test and you have out-of-network coverage, you can submit a receipt to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
- Genova Diagnostics (GI Effects, NutrEval, SIBO): for in-network commercial plans it "will submit claims on your behalf when coverage is indicated", and Medicare "only covers laboratory services defined as medically necessary". This applies to tests ordered by a healthcare provider, not to a seller's listed cash price.
With insurance, the price is set differently: TestWell's ApoB page notes that "with insurance you pay your plan's negotiated rate against your deductible". Whether a test is covered depends on your plan and the reason for testing; ask your insurer.
Can you use an HSA or FSA?
The IRS counts "laboratory fees that are part of medical care" as medical expenses (IRS Publication 502), and defines medical care as the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Some sellers describe their tests as eligible: JustLabs says "HSA/FSA eligible" and TestWell says its price is "HSA/FSA-eligible". Precision Analytical says "We will accept payment from FSA/HSA if it is in the form of a credit card." Whether a particular purchase qualifies depends on the IRS rule and your plan, so check with your HSA or FSA administrator before paying.
